Hi, guys!

Today, I’ll let you know how to say “Where are you from?” in Korean.

When you meet new people while traveling in Korea, you might want to ask which country or city they are from.
Koreans also ask this question a lot when they meet foreigners or even Koreans from other regions.
If you learn a few patterns, you can easily change the word “country” into “city” or “place”.

Then, let’s get into it.

Useful expressions in Korean (English section)

어느 나라에서 오셨어요? : eo-neu na-ra-e-seo o-syeoss-eo-yo?

This is a polite way to ask “Which country are you from?”.
You can use it for most situations, especially with people you meet for the first time.

어디에서 오셨어요? : eo-di-e-seo o-syeoss-eo-yo?

This also means “Where are you from?” in a polite way.
It can mean country, city, or region, depending on the context.

어느 나라 사람이에요? : eo-neu na-ra sa-ram-i-e-yo?

This literally means “Which country’s person are you?”.
It sounds friendly and is also polite enough for everyday conversations.

어느 나라에서 왔어요? : eo-neu na-ra-e-seo wass-eo-yo?

This is a little more casual than “오셨어요?”, but still polite.
You can use it with people who are similar in age or when the atmosphere is friendly.

I hope this post is helpful for you.
